A one-time step per GSTIN on the government portals, before e-way bills and e-invoices can go through gstinapi.in. About five minutes, with an OTP on your registered mobile.
On each portal, create an API user for the GSP Chartered Information Systems Private Limited, with a password of letters and digits only. Send that username and password with your API calls, never your normal portal login. Test them free before your first document: most "Invalid login credentials" (error 108) failures are an API user made for a different GSP.
Only if you generate e-invoices. This is a separate API user from the e-way bill one, even for the same GSTIN.
The credentials test logs in with your API user and does nothing else. No document is created, nothing is charged and the password is not stored. If the login is refused, it tells you the likely cause.
Or from code, with your API key:
curl -X POST "https://gstinapi.in/v1/ewaybill/credentials/test" \
-H "x-api-key: YOUR_API_KEY" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"gstin":"24AAAAA0000A1Z5","gstin_username":"YOUR_EWB_API_USER","password":"YOUR_EWB_API_PASSWORD"}'Up to 3 tests per GSTIN every 15 minutes, because the government login service only allows a few attempts.
| Call | Fields |
|---|---|
| POST /v1/ewaybill (and other e-way bill calls) | gstin, gstin_username, password |
| POST /v1/einvoice | gstin, einv_username, password |
| POST /v1/einvoice/cancel | gstin, einv_username, password, irn (gstin_username still accepted) |
Build the integration first without any of this: every e-way bill and e-invoice call accepts "test_mode": true and returns a sample in the live shape, free. See the API reference.
