Is this GST number real? Three checks, in order

A fake GSTIN on an invoice costs you the input tax credit, not the person who printed it. Each check below catches something the previous one cannot.

  1. 1

    Format and check digit

Instant and offline — the box above does it as you type. Fifteen characters, a real state code, a PAN in the middle, the letter Z, and a check digit that matches the other fourteen. A number invented on a keyboard fails here nine times out of ten. A number that passes has only been shown to be well-formed.

  2. 2

It exists on the GST network

Search it. A well-formed number can still belong to nobody — the check digit is a typo detector, not a registry. The lookup returns the legal name, so compare it to the name on the invoice; a mismatch means the invoice is using someone else's registration.

  3. 3

It is Active, and the right type

A registration that exists can still be Cancelled or Suspended, in which case invoices under it carry no credit. And a Composition dealer cannot charge GST at all. For a supplier you pay every month, a one-time check goes stale — that is what monitoring is for.

What a GST number search tells you

Legal name
The name the business is registered under with the GST department, and the name that must appear on a tax invoice. For a sole proprietorship it is the proprietor's own name, because the registration is made on their PAN; for a company, LLP or partnership firm it is the name of that entity.
Trade name
The brand or operating name, when it differs from the legal name.
GST status
"Active" means the registration is currently valid. "Cancelled" means it is not — claiming input tax credit against a cancelled GSTIN is a common cause of notices.
Taxpayer type
Regular, Composition, SEZ, Casual, Input Service Distributor, TDS or TCS. A composition dealer cannot charge GST separately on an invoice.
Registration date
The date GST registration took effect.
Registered address
The principal place of business on record.
Block status
Whether e-way bill generation is blocked for this GSTIN, usually due to non-filing of returns.
Phone and email
Not shown by a GST number search, here or on the GST portal. The mobile number and email registered against a GSTIN are a separate lookup (see below).

How a GST number is built

A GSTIN is 15 characters, and every part carries meaning. Taking 33AAACC1206D1ZN:

33State codeTamil Nadu — see the full list below
AAACC1206DPANThe 10-character PAN of the business
1Entity codeWhich registration this is for that PAN within the state
ZFixedAlways the letter Z
NChecksumA check character computed from the other fourteen, so a typo is detectable

The check character works like the last digit of a card number: each of the first fourteen characters is read as a base-36 value, alternately multiplied by 1 and 2, the digits of each product added up, and the final character is whatever brings the total to a multiple of 36. One wrong character, or two adjacent ones swapped, always changes the answer.

GSTIN, PAN, TAN and CIN are not the same thing

Four government identifiers show up on Indian business documents. Only one of them is a GST number.

GSTIN15 charactersGST registration. Normally one per state per business, though a business can hold more than one in a state; the state code and PAN are inside it.33AAACC1206D1ZN

A supplier's GST number shows Cancelled — now what?

Check the cancellation date against the invoice date. Invoices dated before the cancellation are usually fine; anything after it is not a valid tax invoice, and input tax credit claimed on it can be reversed with interest when the mismatch surfaces at reconciliation.

Hold payment of the GST component on post-cancellation invoices and ask the supplier for either a revocation order or a fresh registration. If they have re-registered, they will have a new GSTIN — search it here and confirm the legal name matches.

For every supplier you pay regularly, a one-time search is a snapshot. Vendor monitoring re-checks your list on a schedule and emails you the day a registration is cancelled, suspended or renamed — the first five vendors are free.

Searching more than a few numbers?

Use the REST API instead of this page — verify GSTINs directly from your ERP, billing system or spreadsheet. One GET request, JSON back in under a second.

GST number search — questions

How do I search a GST number?

Enter the 15-character GSTIN in the box above and select Search. The details are fetched live from the official GST network and shown in a second. There is no sign-up and no captcha for a single lookup.

Which company does a GST number belong to, and who owns it?

Search the number: the result shows the legal name of the registered business. For a sole proprietorship that is the proprietor's own name, because the registration is made on their PAN. For a company, LLP or partnership firm it is the name of that entity. The trade name, when shown, is the shop or brand name the business trades under, and the address is its principal place of business.

How do I check whether a GST number is regular or composition?

Search it and read the Taxpayer type in the result: Regular, Composition, SEZ unit, Casual taxpayer and so on. A composition taxpayer pays tax on turnover and cannot charge GST on its invoices.

When was a business registered under GST?

The Registration date in the search result is the date the GST registration took effect. It is not the date the business or company was incorporated, which can be earlier.

Does the business have other GST registrations or branches?

Extra places of business in the same state sit under the same GSTIN. A registration in another state is a separate GSTIN on the same PAN, which is characters 3 to 12 of the number. The GST number search by PAN lists every GSTIN registered on a PAN.

Can I find the phone number or email from a GST number?

Not from a GST number search: neither this page nor the GST portal shows contact details. The mobile number and email registered against a GSTIN are available through the GSTIN to contact details lookup on gstinapi.in, for business purposes such as vendor onboarding, KYB and collections.

How can I check if a GST number is fake or valid?

Three checks, in order. First the format: 15 characters, a real state code, a PAN in positions 3 to 12, the letter Z at position 14 and a check digit that matches — this page does that instantly as you type, without a network call, and catches most typos and made-up numbers. Second, a live search: the number must exist on the GST network. Third, the status: it must be Active, and the legal name must match the name on the invoice. A number can pass the first check and fail the other two.

Is this GST number search free?

Yes. Searching a GST number on this page is free, with a fair-use limit of 5 lookups per hour. If you need to search GST numbers from your own software or in bulk, use the REST API instead — every account gets up to 75 free API credits that never expire.

What is the format of a GST number?

A GSTIN is 15 characters: a 2-digit state code, then the 10-character PAN of the business, then a 1-character entity code for that PAN in that state, then the letter Z, then a 1-character checksum. For example, in 33AAACC1206D1ZN the 33 identifies Tamil Nadu and AAACC1206D is the PAN.

Can I find a GST number by company name or PAN?

Not from this page. The public search on the GST portal offers GSTIN, PAN, temporary ID and composition taxpayer, and we found no search by company name. The portal does have a manual Search by PAN page, and our PAN to GSTIN API lists the GSTINs registered on a PAN. The GSTIN contains the PAN in positions 3 to 12, and the check character is calculated from the other fourteen, so candidates can be built from a PAN, but only a live lookup shows which of them exist.

What does it mean if a GST number shows as Cancelled?

The registration is no longer valid. Any tax invoice issued under it after the cancellation date is not a valid document for claiming input tax credit. This is worth checking before paying a supplier invoice.

What is a composition dealer, and why does the taxpayer type matter?

A business under the GST composition scheme pays tax at a flat rate on turnover and cannot charge GST on its invoices or pass on input tax credit. If a supplier shows as Composition and their invoice carries a GST amount, that invoice is wrong and the credit is not claimable. Regular taxpayers charge GST normally; SEZ units follow zero-rated supply rules.

Can I check many GST numbers at once?

Not on this page — it is built for one number at a time. For a vendor list, sign up for the API: it takes a GSTIN per request, returns JSON, and a short script or spreadsheet integration can run through thousands. Vendors you deal with regularly can also be put on a watchlist that re-checks them and alerts you when a status changes.

How current is the data?

Every search hits the live GST Suvidha Provider network at the moment you run it. Nothing is served from a cache, so a registration cancelled today shows as cancelled today.
