Enter a PAN to see the GST number it would have in every state, then check the states you need live on the GST network. Free, no sign-up.
Live checks are free, 5 an hour. Create a free account for API access.
A GSTIN contains its holder’s PAN in characters 3 to 12, so the possible GSTIN in each state can be worked out from a PAN, but only a live check shows which of them are registered. Enter a PAN above to list all 36 and check the states you need free, or scan every state in one API call.
A GSTIN has 15 characters: a 2-digit state code, the 10-character PAN, a 1-character entity code, the letter Z, and a check character calculated from the other fourteen. So for any PAN, the GSTIN it would hold in Gujarat starts 24, in Maharashtra 27, and so on, and the check character can be calculated exactly.
That is why the list above appears instantly, without a network call. What the calculation cannot tell you is whether the business actually registered in that state. Only a live check on the GST network answers that, and a well-formed GSTIN can still belong to nobody.
The list uses the first registration in each state (entity code 1). A business with a second registration in the same state, for a separate vertical, has a GSTIN ending in 2Z, 3Z and so on, which is not listed. More on the format: what the 15 characters of a GSTIN mean.
